Weicon Contact VA 20 Cyanoacrylate Adhesive is a low-viscosity industrial adhesive developed for fast bonding of rubber and plastics. Thanks to its very rapid initial grab, it provides a process advantage that saves time in high-throughput assembly and maintenance operations. Its transparent (colorless) cure makes it suitable for applications where a cleaner finish is desired on aesthetic surfaces and visible bonding points. When applied as a thin film, it supports bond quality by providing good wetting on close-tolerance parts. The product is manufactured by WEICON GmbH & Co. KG (Münster, Germany).

Cyanoacrylate structure of Contact VA 20 and basic operating principle

This product is a single-component industrial adhesive based on ethyl cyanoacrylate chemistry. Because it polymerizes very quickly when triggered by ambient moisture, initial handling strength can be achieved within seconds after the parts are joined. Its low viscosity (<20 mPa·s) helps it penetrate narrow gaps and enables practical application especially on rubber and plastic surfaces. A maximum gap-bridging capacity of up to 0.1 mm supports a more controlled bond line on well-fitting surfaces. Being silicone-free reduces the risk of undesirable silicone contamination in certain painting and surface-treatment processes.

Contact VA 20 performance characteristics and strength approach

This industrial adhesive can show an initial bond of around 2 seconds on metal surfaces such as aluminum when the surface has been abraded/activated. On engineering plastics such as ABS and rigid PVC, initial bonding is typically in the order of seconds and may vary depending on surface condition. A curing time of 24 hours should be considered as the basis for full final strength development and should be taken into account in planning. According to DIN EN 1465, shear strength is reported as 9–19 MPa on steel, 5–14 MPa on aluminum, and 6–12 MPa on certain plastics. Temperature resistance is specified as -50 °C to +80 °C, with short-term resistance up to +100 °C; these values define boundary conditions for applications exposed to heat loads.

Application conditions and proper dosing management

The recommended process window is an application temperature of +15 °C to +40 °C and relative humidity between 40% and 70%. The adhesive should be applied to only one of the two surfaces, and the parts should be joined and fixed quickly, because curing begins immediately with ambient moisture. Keeping the application thickness within 0.05–0.2 mm is important for complete curing and stable strength. In large-area bonding, spot application can help reduce internal stresses and create a more balanced bond line. As a practical reference for economical consumption, it is stated that a single drop can cover approximately 3–5 cm².

Surface preparation, compatible materials, and standards

Clean and dry surfaces are the most critical success factor in cyanoacrylate systems; dust, dirt, and moisture can significantly reduce adhesion. While rubber and plastics are the main target materials, it can also be used in metal/plastic close-fit joints and performs well in narrow gaps. For difficult-to-bond plastics such as PE, PP, and PTFE, pre-treatment with a surface primer is recommended to increase process reliability. For food-contact applications, compliance references are stated with ISEGA approval and EC 1935/2004 and LFGB §§ 30–31; industrial classification information is also provided with ISSA and IMPA codes. Shelf life is given as a minimum of 9 months at room temperature and a minimum of 12 months at +2 °C to +7 °C, and these limits should be considered in stock management.

Sector-based application areas and key advantages

In automotive suppliers and general assembly lines, it is frequently preferred as an industrial adhesive for plastic clips, gasket-like elastomer parts, and small components that require fast fixturing. In electrical and electronics assembly, it offers a practical solution for rapid fixing of plastic housing parts, cable-duct details, and small accessory components. In machinery maintenance, it can enable fast intervention with short downtime for repairs of plastic-rubber auxiliary parts. In packaging, white goods, and consumer product manufacturing, low viscosity provides more uniform spreading in narrow gaps and a cleaner application advantage. Transparent curing helps reduce visible residue at exposed points, while the seconds-level initial grab supports process speed.
