Weicon Contact VA 1403 Cyanoacrylate Adhesive is an alkoxy-based industrial adhesive designed for clean, visually neat bonding in assemblies with special requirements. Thanks to its high-viscosity formulation, it has a low tendency to run and makes controlled application easier on small parts. Its longer curing window helps operators save time in jobs where part positioning is required. Being positioned with low odor and reduced whitening (blooming) offers an advantage in processes where aesthetics are important.
Alkoxy-based cyanoacrylate structure in VA 1403
This industrial adhesive is a single-component, liquid product based on alkoxy cyanoacrylate chemistry. Its colorless and clear appearance is preferred for applications aiming for a colorless bond line after curing as well. Since the technical documentation states a high-viscosity range of 1,100–1,800 mPa·s, it provides more controlled behavior especially on vertical surfaces and where flow into gaps is not desired. Because the maximum gap-bridging capacity is limited to 0.2 mm, the best results are generally achieved on well-fitting surfaces and with a thin bond line.
Application method and process management
The product is generally used by applying it to only one surface and joining the parts quickly, supporting a serial assembly rhythm. The recommended application temperature is +15 °C to +40 °C; going outside this range may affect curing behavior. Since a 24-hour period is defined for full strength development, loading and functional tests should be planned with this time in mind. Temperature resistance is specified as -50 °C to +80 °C, with short-term exposure up to +100 °C, so process conditions should be evaluated accordingly in heat-exposed assemblies.
Curing dynamics and environmental conditions
Because cyanoacrylate systems cure with ambient moisture, bonding speed varies depending on substrate type and environmental conditions. The technical documentation provides example initial fixture times of approximately 4.5 minutes on grit-blasted aluminum, about 60 seconds on untreated ABS, and about 5 minutes on rigid PVC. A relative humidity range of 40–70% is recommended; the process can slow down significantly at very low humidity, while at very high humidity there may be a risk of sudden curing on some surfaces. For repeatable results across different materials with the same industrial adhesive, keeping environmental conditions stable is important.
Surface preparation, primer, and practical tips
For successful bonding, surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of oil; contamination and moisture can reduce bond strength. On very smooth surfaces, light abrasion can support adhesion and help form a more balanced bond line. Since pre-treatment with a suitable CA primer is recommended for difficult-to-bond plastics such as PE, PP, POM, and PTFE, as well as for TPE and silicone surfaces, the preparation step should be planned according to the material. Keeping the application thickness within the 0.05–0.2 mm range is important for healthy full curing, and spot application on larger areas can help reduce internal stresses.
Sector-based applications and advantages
VA 1403 can be considered in production and maintenance operations where “clean workmanship” is expected for fast assembly of plastic–metal combinations, plastic parts, and various materials. Its high viscosity and reduced whitening approach is beneficial in product assembly with visible surfaces, electrical/electronic component bonding, precision equipment assembly, and general MRO (maintenance, repair, and operations) processes. Being positioned as less sensitive to moisture effects supports stability targets in assemblies exposed to variable environmental conditions. With proper surface preparation, the shear strength ranges shared according to DIN EN 1465 on metals such as grit-blasted steel and aluminum practically indicate the strong bond-line potential of this industrial adhesive class.
