Hylomar Universal Blue Fuel and Gas Resistant 100 g is a non-setting gasket and jointing compound developed to provide sealing on flanged and threaded joints. Since it does not cure and harden like conventional silicone/RTV types, it allows joint movement under flexing, vibration, and thermal expansion after assembly. Applied as a thin film, it can tolerate surface irregularities and helps parts separate without damage during disassembly. The product is manufactured by Hylomar Ltd in the United Kingdom.

What is Universal Blue gasket compound and what is its technical composition?

This product is described as a polyester-urethane based sealing compound and retains its non-hardening character even at elevated temperatures. After application, it leaves a thin residual film on the surface, reducing leak risk in metal-to-metal and, in many applications, plastic-to-plastic joints. Because it is available in different viscosity grades, film thickness and coverage depend on the chosen grade; for 100 g, typical coverage is given as approximately 0.56–1.875 m². In addition, its non-staining behavior near metals such as copper and silver at raised temperatures can be important for connections close to electrical/switch mechanisms.

Performance in fuel and gas environments

Manufacturer technical documentation states that the product shows broad compatibility with industrial fuels, oils, water and brine, air, turbine/piston engine combustion products, water-glycol and methanol-water mixtures, fuels such as gasoline/kerosene, and certain fluorocarbon refrigerants. Since the operating temperature range is specified as -50 °C to +250 °C, it provides a reliable buffer layer against temperature fluctuations in engine and process equipment. Resistance to joint movement caused by vibration, thermal expansion, and contraction is critical for leakage control where flange face distortion may occur. Some technical documents indicate a typical pressure resistance up to 35 bar (500 psi) with proper assembly.

Application method and process recommendations

For best results, surfaces should be clean and dry, free from oil, dirt, and old gasket residues. The product is applied as a thin film or a fine bead to one or both surfaces, then briefly left to allow the solvent to flash off. In practice, assembling the parts within about 15 minutes after application is recommended for joint performance; the non-setting nature also makes alignment easier during assembly. After assembly, due to the nature of the compound, some joints may require re-torquing of bolts/nuts to keep torque stable. If a pressure test will be performed, a minimum drying time of at least 30 minutes is recommended depending on ambient temperature.

Storage, maintenance, and ease of disassembly

The product should be stored in a cool, dry place with adequate ventilation; manufacturer documentation indicates an approximate storage range of 5–25 °C. Some technical data sheets specify a shelf life of 2 years, so stock rotation by production date is a sound approach. One of the strongest advantages during service and overhaul is that the joint can be easily dismantled and cleaned; residues after disassembly can be removed by rubbing with a cloth moistened with acetone, often reducing the need for scraping. Since the product is stated to contain dichloromethane, ventilation and occupational safety procedures should not be neglected in enclosed-area applications.

Industrial applications and compatible surfaces

Universal Blue is commonly preferred on machined flange faces and threaded connections in areas where sealing is challenged by vibration, such as engines, pumps, and transmissions. Typical examples include water and oil pumps, cylinder heads, crankcase/sump areas, intake manifolds, timing covers, oil pump joints, gearbox and transmission components, and thread sealing applications. On the energy and process side, its use is also noted for equipment assembly such as gas turbines, water-cooled generators, and turbo vacuum systems. In electrical and infrastructure applications, uses for weather-proofing against outdoor conditions and certain high-voltage equipment joints are included in technical documentation. Its thin-film character that permits metal-to-metal contact, combined with proper surface preparation, both reduces leakage risk and supports damage-free separation of parts during servicing.
