Thanks to its paste-like consistency, it keeps its shape on vertical surfaces and along corners/edges, forming a hard layer after application that helps reduce material loss caused by friction. Its mineral-filled structure is intended to act as a protective “armor,” especially on lines with high contact loads such as conveyors, guides, and slides. The product is manufactured by Germany-based WEICON GmbH & Co. KG.

Technical structure and product characteristics of the WEICON WR2 epoxy system
WR2 is an epoxy-based, mineral-filled resin system; its texture is described as paste-like and its color as anthracite. The mixing ratio for application is 100:33 by weight (100:27 by volume), and controlled mixing is required because deviations can significantly affect physical properties. A mixture viscosity of 560,000 mPa·s at +25 °C supports the product’s non-sagging, shapeable character. The minimum shelf life at room temperature is stated as 36 months, which adds practicality in maintenance stock planning.

Resistance profile, wear performance, and operating limits
The temperature resistance of this epoxy system is defined as -35 °C to +120 °C, which supports material selection for equipment exposed to continuous friction and heat build-up. Post-cure mechanical properties are reported as 115 MPa compressive strength, 96 MPa flexural strength, and Shore D hardness of 87±3; this combination supports form stability of the coating/repair layer under load. For wear behavior, a loss value of 1.1 g / 0.6 cm³ is reported in the Taber test; this value technically describes the product’s wear-protection focus. On the adhesion side, pull-off adhesion strength is given as 11 MPa and lap shear strength on blast-cleaned steel as 16 MPa; surface preparation is considered decisive for these results.

Application method and curing management
The application temperature is defined as +15 °C to +40 °C, with relative humidity below 85%; additionally, component temperature must be at least 3 °C above the dew point. Since the pot life at 20 °C (for a 500 g mix) is 30 minutes, the batch size prepared on site should be planned in small portions according to this window. Values of about 4 hours for recoating, 5 hours for working strength, and 12 hours for full strength are provided; final hardness is targeted within a maximum of 24 hours at 20 °C. The recommended maximum layer thickness in one step is 20 mm; at a 1.0 mm layer thickness, typical consumption is estimated at about 1.9 kg/m².

Surface preparation, compatible substrates, and critical field tips
The basic requirement for successful application is to completely remove oil, grease, dirt, rust, oxides, and paint residues; grinding or preferably grit blasting is recommended on smooth or heavily contaminated surfaces. The blasting target is cleanliness close to SA 2½ and a surface profile of 75–100 µm, strengthening the epoxy’s “mechanical keying” to the substrate. For metal surfaces exposed to seawater/salt solutions, rinsing with demineralized water and performing soluble salt testing according to the Bresle method are recommended; the maximum allowable soluble salt level on the substrate is given as 40 mg/m². Working a thin first layer into the surface with crosswise movements helps penetration into cracks and roughness; afterward, the layer should be built evenly without trapping air bubbles.

Sector-specific applications and key advantages
WR2 is positioned for repair and wear prevention in areas such as conveyor systems, guide rails, and slides where processing casting compounds is difficult. By forming a protective layer on metal surfaces exposed to high abrasion and erosion, it helps extend equipment service life and optimize maintenance intervals. In fields such as mechanical and plant engineering and equipment/fixture engineering, it can be considered a practical option that supports an in-situ repair approach. It can also serve as a wear-resistant base layer in systems where Ceramic BL is applied as a topcoat, offering an advantage in layered protection strategies; classification with ISSA and IMPA codes can further facilitate procurement processes in inventory management.

It is a two-component epoxy resin–based wear repair and protection material; its paste-like, non-sagging consistency allows application in narrow areas and on vertical surfaces.
